My little girl is a bright, happy and healthy four-year-old. She was just that way when we first enrolled her in another school across town, a school with a stellar reputation. That’s when things began to change: she became shy and withdrawn—not herself at all. For months she suffered terrible separation anxiety and even had trouble sleeping at night. So we said goodbye to that school, and hello to The Hill School. Of course, I was nervous when that next school year began at The Hill School. I was anticipating a battle but was willing to endure it because I was convinced that socialization with her peers was the one thing she needed that I could not provide. And so we bore down and prepared for the worst, never daring to dream that what we would get was beyond our highest hopes. My daughter was tentative at first but, to my surprise, quickly gained her footing. She spent her time exploring the environment and learning to navigate her classmates. She was content. As the weeks passed, something happened. I can’t pinpoint the exact moment, but before I knew it, she had begun to blossom! She shared stories about her day at dinnertime….She performed songs and poems for the entire family that she had learned during "Circle Time" at school….And she made her first “Best Friend.” Other parents noticed the changes, too. One mother said to me, “Your daughter has changed so much this year. It seems like she has really become comfortable with herself.” That’s when it occurred to me: That’s essence of Waldorf education, becoming oneself. Waldorf education speaks to me on such a deep level because it honors the individual, regardless of development stage, personal challenge, or personality. It’s not a one-size-fits all solution, rather it’s a tailored approach that teaches with more compassion and thought than any other. I’m so grateful to The Hill School for all that it has done for my daughter.

Our son attended The Hill School for Pre-school and Kindergarten. He has a capacity to concentrate on projects that is well better and deeper than that of other children of the same age. The personal commitment of the teachers to every child is exceptional and in teacher-parent conferences their deep understanding of our child became obvious. We have moved away since Hurrican Katrina but still fondly remember our times with the Hill School community. Anybody who's paying private school tuition anywhere should look at this school. What it doesn't offer in equipped gymnasiums and other big school perks it pays back with personal dedication to your childs needs and development. Open parent-teacher communication and unique creative learning environment for your child. Parents, go to an open house. Have open eyes, hearts and minds. Our son is still drawing from this time of beauty, peace and harmony in his young childhood.

Pros: small classes, best teachers and support staff anywhere

Cons: nothing that can't be worked out with the help of the parents
