The Scene
Housed in the Royal Street Inn (a fancy name for a bar with a couple of rooms to rent), the R Bar sports a particularly unique blend of low-key sophistication and bohemian-grunge bonhomi. This place sports an odd amalgam of '50s-style appointments and a spare couch-and-pool-table feng shui layout. It's a popular attraction for Marigny residents, Frenchmen Street stragglers, smug see-and-be-seen slummers, the occasional rock star and locals.
The Draw
Notable for a general lack of pretense to either trendy eccentricity or hip hidden-secret status. The R Bar boasts one of the most agreeable vibes in town--almost an anti-vibe, really. Sure, it's something of a hipster hangout, but that's an accident of fate rather than a consequence of design; it's really just a neighborhood hangout at heart, and comes across its popularity subtly and naturally.

When to GoThings really get going after midnight, but you're just as likely to have a perfectly good time in the earlier evening hours.
The ExtrasCheck out the rock-band equipment, complete with skeleton lead singer, hanging from the ceiling over the bar (it's not nearly as obtrusive or contrived as it sounds). Also keep an eye out for the giant shark.

the bartenders could be friendlier but this place is still cool. miss the jukebox. but there's pool and good specials and occasionally free shrimp or oysters.
